Here’s something that should genuinely annoy you. 👀

The post you spent forty minutes on can lose to a competitor’s fifteen second phone video. Not because their information is better. Because their first line was.

The first 3 seconds decide whether anything else you made gets seen at all. Everything after that is a bonus round you only reach if the opening earns it.

That feels unfair, and it is. It’s also completely fixable, and it costs nothing but a rewrite.

What’s Actually Happening When Someone Scrolls

Your future client isn’t evaluating your content. She’s scanning. 📲

She’s in bed, half watching something else, thumb already moving. Her brain is running one question over and over without her noticing.

Is this worth stopping for?

That question gets answered before she reads your caption, before she knows what treatment you’re discussing, and long before she notices you’re a professional. Which means your opening isn’t competing on quality. It’s competing for a fraction of a second of divided attention.

Once you accept that, everything about how you open changes.

Why Logos and Warmups Kill Your Reach

Watch what happens when a video opens with a branded intro. 🚫

Nothing. The thumb moves.

Same with a slow pan across your space, text fading in gently, or you adjusting the camera before you start talking. Every one of those spends your three seconds on setup instead of substance.

Here’s the fix, and it feels wrong at first. Start mid thought.

Not “Hi everyone, today I want to talk about…” Instead: “Your filler didn’t migrate.”

You’ve skipped the throat clearing entirely and dropped someone into a conversation already in progress. That’s disorienting in exactly the right way, because disorientation requires resolution, and resolution requires staying.

Open a Loop Instead of Announcing a Topic

Most openings fail because they describe what’s coming rather than creating a reason to care. 💭

Watch the difference:

  • “Today I’m covering filler migration” → “Your filler didn’t migrate. It was overfilled.”
  • “Some tips for using retinol” → “Retinol getting worse before better isn’t a reaction. It’s supposed to happen.”
  • “About our consultation process” → “Nobody tells you what actually happens at a consultation, so here it is.”

The left column announces. The right column asserts something specific that the reader now needs explained.

That’s the entire mechanic. An announcement can be skipped without cost. An unresolved claim cannot.

The Question Opening (Your Easiest Win)

If loops feel hard to write, use a real question instead. 💬

“Someone asked me this yesterday and I don’t think anyone answers it honestly.”

This works for a reason worth understanding. It positions the reader as an observer of a conversation rather than the target of a broadcast. People lean toward overheard things and away from things aimed at them.

Plus, you already have an unlimited supply. Every question a client asked you this week is a ready made opening, and those questions are pre-validated because a real person cared enough to ask.

Say the Thing Other Providers Avoid

Opinions outperform education almost every time in the first 3 seconds. 🔥

“I’d never do this to my own face.”
“Most people don’t need what they think they need.”
“This treatment is popular and usually a waste of money.”

There’s a fear here worth naming. Bold openings feel like they’ll alienate people, so most providers soften everything into neutrality. Then their content sounds like every other account in the city.

Here’s what actually happens. A strong opinion filters out the people who were never going to book you and deeply attracts the ones who were. Both of those are wins. Neutral content does neither, which is why it gets ignored by everyone equally.

Just make sure the body of the post earns the opening. The hook buys attention. The explanation buys trust. Skipping the second part is how you become the account people watch but never book.

Your Visual Has to Agree With Your Words

The first 3 seconds are visual too, and mismatches are why some strong hooks still flop. 🎬

If your text says something surprising, your face should look like you’re saying something surprising. If your opening promises a reveal, the frame needs movement, not a static shot of you sitting perfectly still.

People read tone before they read words. When your energy contradicts your hook, it registers as inauthentic even though the viewer couldn’t explain why. They just keep scrolling.

Run the Five Post Scroll Test

Here’s the tangible, and it’s uncomfortable on purpose. 📋

Open your last five posts. Read only the first line of each, out loud.

Now ask honestly: would you stop for any of them?

Most people find that one out of five works. And almost always, that one is the post that performed best, which is the whole argument in a single data point from your own account.

Then rewrite the other four using anything from this post. Keep a running note of openings as they occur to you. How to Build a Content Bank turns that into a system, and Instagram Series Ideas for Aesthetic Practices shows how to build recurring formats around your strongest ones.

Rewrite One Opening Today

Your expertise is real. The first 3 seconds are what decide whether anyone gets to it. 🙌

Skip the warmup, open a loop, use a real question, say the uncomfortable thing, and let your energy match your words.

Then take your best post from last month, give it a stronger opening, and repost it. Nobody remembers, and it will almost certainly do better the second time.

That’s not a trick. It’s just proof that the content was never the problem.
